Biofeedback

“Biofeedback is the process of gaining greater awareness of many physiological functions primarily using instruments that provide information on the activity of those same systems, with a goal of being able to manipulate them at will.”
This project succeeded in creating a functional biofeedback system using a $300 electroencephalogram (EEG) and a couple lines of code. The EEG used is an early developer version of the Emotiv EPOC. Nanovoltage brainwave signals are measured via the EEG, encrypted, and transmitted via bluetooth to a laptop dongle. Proprietary software interprets the signals by applying an FFT and then measuring the summed amplitude in a specific bandwidth. Many studies have demonstrated the high correlate between brainwave activity in certain bandwidths and measurable physiological states. Here, the proprietary software measures “meditation” and “frustration.” The interpreted level of meditation inversely controls the computer generated tone. The interpreted level of frustration directly controls the speed of the oscillation.
